General Motors vehicles have the most issues with check engine lights caused by diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0014. All four of its divisions—Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC—make the list of automobiles most vulnerable to this problem. To make matters worse, Chevrolet and GMC are at the top of the index. However, neither the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 nor GMC Sierra 1500 pickups contribute to this status.

There are a few interesting comparisons among specific GM vehicles. For instance, according to FIXD sensor data, the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain have high code P0014 incidents. These compact crossovers share a platform and many components, so seeing similar results is unsurprising.

However, it’s different with the other GM crossovers. The three-row GMC Acadia has a medium-level history with P0014 occurrences. Meanwhile, the Acadia’s corporate cousins and platform mates, the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave, are at a low level of P0014 happenings.

Ford makes the list, too. But all of its vehicles are at low occurrence rates. The heavy-duty F-250 and F-350 pickups are part of this assessment, but the F-150 doesn’t have a history of P0014-related problems.

However, some Japanese brands do. In particular, FIXD sensor data shows that several Nissan, Toyota, and Subaru models are prone to check engine lights caused by coded P0014. However, none of the vehicles have medium or high occurrence ratings.

Lastly, Dodge completes the top ten ranking as its Charger, Durango, and Ram 1500 models have P0014-related backgrounds.

Keep reading as we cover the top makes and models prone to code P0015 instances. These year-by-year details look at low, moderate, or high occurrences and are based on a broad spectrum of model years, from 2000 through 2023, and vehicles with installed FIXD sensors.

What is Code P0014?

Top Makes and Models with DTC P0014 (3)

Code P0014 is a diagnostic trouble code that indicates a problem with the exhaust camshaft timing in bank 1 of the engine. This code is triggered when the camshaft timing exceeds a predetermined threshold, causing an over-advanced condition in vehicles equipped with variable valve timing (VVT) or variable camshaft timing (VCT) systems. The issue is serious because an out-of-sync camshaft can lead to the pistons colliding with the valves, resulting in bent valves, destroyed valve seals, and piston damage, which can cause catastrophic engine damage. So, a vehicle with code P0014 should not be driven until the problem is addressed.

Why does the code P0014 keep coming back? ›

The following are the most likely causes: The camshaft's timing is incorrect. The valve control solenoid has failed and is stuck open. The valve control solenoid system's wiring is faulty or damaged.

What causes exhaust camshaft position timing over-advanced bank 1? ›

It can be triggered by a faulty camshaft actuator, failed VVT solenoid, damaged timing components, and circuit issues. Low engine oil levels, oil contamination, and issues with the PCM can also trigger the code.

Can a bad camshaft position sensor cause P0014? ›

Whether your vehicle logged code P0014 due to a faulty camshaft position sensor, a malfunctioning oil control solenoid, or something else, you need to address it immediately. Replacing the failing part usually clears the code and prevents issues down the line.
