TJX Credit Card Review
4.5 / 5
- Two for One. There are two TJ Maxx credit cards: The TJX Mastercard and the TJX Store Card. You don’t really get to choose between them, though. There’s only one application, and the card you get largely depends on your creditworthiness. People with good or excellent credit generally get the Mastercard, while folks with fair credit get the store card. Fortunately, it’s not a big deal either way, as the TJX Store Card has all of the TJX Mastercard’s best features. Nevertheless, you can check your credit score for free on WalletHub to see which offer you’re likely to get approved for.
- Nice initial discount. Both TJX cards give you 10% discount onyour first in-store purchase, which could definitely prove to be a big money-saver, even if it’s not the biggest discount available from a retailer-affiliated credit card. Some offer 15% to 20% off.
- Great ongoing TJX rewards. Both TJ Maxx Cards also give you 5 points per $1 spent not only at TJ Maxx, but also at Marshalls, HomeGoods and Sierra Trading Post. That equates to 5% cash back, in the form of store credit. The 1 point per $1 spent that the TJ Maxx Mastercard gives you at all other stores obviously pales in comparison. In fact, that earning rate is just below the market average for a rewards card – reason enough to use different plastic for purchases outside the TJX family.
- No good for financing. Carrying a balance on a TJX rewards card isn’t the best idea, considering both offers charge interest at a high annual rate. That not only dwarfs the 18.2% average APR for excellent-credit credit cards, but is also much higher than even the average for fair-credit credit cards, according to WalletHub’s latest Credit Card Landscape Report.

Please stay away from this credit card. I had my card for seven years, and in those seven years, my interest rate was raised to 34%. This is insane, and I have learned my lesson and closed the account for the best. I would definitely never open a credit card from Synchrony.

I told them I was going to be one day late with my payment due to a mistake in my banking. They said they would charge me an over fee, so I said, "Well, it's already late, so I'll let it go until the following period."

Having this card is a nightmare. The way they harass you with calls and emails when you're not even behind on payments is unbearable. It can be weeks before your next payment is due, and they harass you every day, leaving voicemails and sending multiple emails and calls. I've used the card once, paid more than the minimum, and they act as if you owe them 10k and haven't made a payment in months. Once I pay off the balance, I'm canceling this card. It's a nightmare.

Thiscard initially gaveme $200, and it was just like a membership; I couldn't use itin thestore. Then the seller advised me to top up again, and this time I got a credit of $800. But after a while, they closed my $200 credit card and changed my $800 card to $1000. This happened in a very short period of time, and I don't remember ever being late on a $200 payment. So now, without any reason, they blocked one of my cards and added their money to my second card. It now appears on my credit history that I have just covered it up. When I called them to talk about it, they hung up on me. So, I don't recommend anyone to use this card.

I was in the D'Iberville, Mississippi, Marshalls store in late 2022 (I loved to shop there often) and was offered to save on that purchase if I applied for and used the card, if approved. I was approved and used my card then and a few other times there to buy merchandise. My account was paid in full each billing cycle and was at a $0 balance when I was there last Christmas shopping with a friend in late 2023. On that shopping trip, my card was declined, and I made the purchase anyway with another form of payment. I was a little confused and embarrassed but asked to speak with a manager for some clarification on what the issue could be. The manager called card support and told me that my card had been closed (with a $0 balance and not delinquent) due to existing excessive revolving credit cards.
I didn't ask for the card; I applied and was approved, paid it off in full each time after, and only used it a few times, having it closed out on me without notice. That experience was the best way to make me not ever want to shop there again.

Twice they have not sent me a statement to pay the bill. Then they charge you a late fee and interest. They waived it once, but now that it happened again, they will not waive the late fee; they waived the interest. As soon as we received the late notice, we called and paid the statement in full. We explained to them that we never received the statement for payment. They said they sent it. They told us if we did not pay the late fee and interest, they would charge us more interest and another late fee. I asked them for proof of them emailing the statement; they told me I had to trust them. Then they hung up.

I got this card for the rewards since I am a TJX loyal customer. However, I forgot to pay on time because I do not use it frequently. They do not work with you to settle their large fees and high interest. Do not get this card. The rewards are minimal when compared to their fees. Use your regular credit card if you have one.

Having had this card for three years, all charges were paid in full on each statement. My balance was decreased from $900 to $100, considerably dropping my score. I called and was advised it was due to my TransUnion report's lack of real estate, a derogatory report, and debt. I have one derogatory issue, which, after speaking with my personal banks, clearly indicated litigation and consumer disputes. Otherwise, my repayment history reflects in the 90th percentile. My score was 711 until TJX dropped my score. Keep in mind the same bank for TJX, I have other credit cards with, and they have not decreased the balance. I will not utilize them nor shop at any of their locations again.

Synchrony is disappointing; it's best to apply with Comenity. I've had a good credit score of 685, yet I was still not approved. I'm not concerned about applying with Synchrony anymore. Also, Amazon uses Synchrony; it's surprising given how much money I've spent with these two companies.
